Q: What are
some in fashions for formal dances/proms for a 15-year-old?
A: There are
about a million different styles out there for proms this spring.
You'll find plenty of princess dresses with boned bodices -- either
strapless or with skinny camisole straps -- and A-line skirts, often
tulle or net or organza over taffeta. Most of these seem to be in
subtle grayed-down pastels, like twilight blues and dawn pinks.
There are also lots of slinky shapes with narrow skirts with slits
in darker shades, garnet or bottle green or navy blue or deep teal
or black, often with beading or sequins.
But don't feel that, just because you're going to
a prom, you have to wear a serious evening gown. Other looks to
consider: a long sundress in a summery tropical print, or a sophisticated
short cocktail dress, or a long skirt, either a fluffy ball skirt
or maybe an Indian print, worn with a T-shirt or the top half of
a tankini bathing suit. If you're on a tight budget, check out the
racks at Target, Sears, or K-Mart, or shop thrift shops or vintage
stores.
The main thing, whether you spend $800 for a designer
number at Saks or $15 for a classic 1950s prom gown at Goodwill,
is to find something that suits your own sense of style, that fits
comfortably -- or can be altered without too much trouble -- and
that you look and feel pretty in. Whatever you do, don't agonize:
Remember, it's only a dress. And don't forget: The whole point of
a prom is to have fun.
