Q: I am a size
13 (I range between 12 and 14) and I really would like to look great
in casual wear, but I don't really seem to have such a taste.
A: First, let's talk about sizes.
I know it seems logical that a person who is in between a size 12
and size 14 would be a size 13, but it just doesn't work that way.
In the U.S., odd-number sizes 1-3-5-7-9-11-13 are "junior" sizes,
meaning they're cut for a shorter-waisted, higher-busted, theoretically
younger body. Clothes that come in junior sizes tend to be less
expensive and a little more on the cute, girlish side.
Even-number sizes 2 through 18 are "misses" or "missy"
sizes meant for a somewhat longer-waisted, fuller-busted body, and
tend to be more grown-up looking. Except for these supposed differences,
a 7 and an 8 are meant to be the same size. This is why you'll occasionally
find size tags that read 7/8 or 11/12. So, a 13 is pretty much the
same size as a 14 -- theoretically. This equivalency is only theoretical
because, except in military uniforms and home sewing patterns, women's
clothing sizes aren't standardized. One designer's 8 is another's
10.
My advice is try on plenty of clothes until you
find some that fit well, and then stick with those labels and sizes.
Don't be surprised if you wear different sizes in different brands.
As for casual clothes, if you don't have a taste for them, why wear
them? Unless you're going to a picnic or something else where wearing
a dress would look terminally weird. In that case, look for a long
denim skirt so you'll feel comfortable sitting on the ground, if
it comes to that.
